I have plenty of resources for free plant foods for my herbivores..hibiscus leaves, dandelion....now planting some of my own dandelion, and nopales. Tried to start a mouse & rat colony...but they all escaped!lolol...so having to buy them again for my snakes....jumbo rats quite expensive at $4.85 each and then mice but recently found a good cheap supplier at 50 cents each then earthworms/mealworms/crix for the beardeds and turts can get pretty expensive! crix about $15.00 a month , starting a mealworm colony so haven't had to spend much on mealworms lately but spent maybe $5.00 a month then Earthworms for the turts...about $10 a month....so ya see herbivores win hands down at my house. I think it all depends on the individual what type of reptile , number, and the resources one has...I know some people spending a fortune on insects, mice, ground turkey etc...for their monitors (prolly why so many of the ones Ive seen are obese!) but if they were to start their own colonies more than likely that would definately cut costs
