It may have been a repeat, but I just saw it tonight, one part was about how great Iguanas are as pets.
The man they interviewed was from New York (I think) and told of how easy it was to own an Iguana. He leaves it run loose in his apartment and feeds it tuna, cat food, macaroni, and some fruit! (He said he feeds it whatever he eats) He also says how they make the perfect apartment pet because you can leave them alone all weekend, and basicly only need to make sure they are warm.
He never mentions UVB lighting, proper diet, etc. From watching that show, it would seem that Iguanas are VERY easy to care for, and require little more than a warm place to sleep. I tried to find an e-mail address for the show, but couldn't. I love the Animal Planet channel, and was a bit surprised that they would show something like that. Considering how many poor Igs die each year due to neglect and abuse, why would they show someone with obviously no clue about Igs?
I would guess that more than a few people would go out and get one based on that mans interview. Who wouldn't want a mini dinosaur running around their house eating mac and cheese? Its cool, right?
(Maybe I'm over-reacting) But I wish people would go on TV saying how wonderful Igs are, BUT explain that they are NOT easy to care for.
Sorry for rambling.
