This identification has been verified for me by several other experts in the field. Thank you so much for your help as well! At least we can rest assured as to what he is and that he is getting the proper care.

Candace

: ctenosaua pectinata (from Mexico and south-west US)) seems to have shoerter and blackier spines along its body, and has, like your fella there, black and yellowish stripes.
: c. similis (from most of Central America) has somewhat more "refined", brighter stripes, and although it also shows similar colors, the side seems to be a "blueish-black" with black stripes.
: yours has more yellow falling on the sides.
: Therefore, i'd say that it's a C.pectinata (90% sure). a good book on igs with lots of pics can help (i looked at Sprackland's 'Giant Lizards', pg. 242).
: tell us if you find out otherwise, but i'm pretty sure yours is a pectinata.
: see ya!

: : We got in this weekend from the Toronto SPCA, what we were told by the vets there is a spiny-tailed black iguana.

: : He is severely underweight and about 1.5ft long. He is doing exceptionally well in foster care - chasing down the crickets and munching on the greens like there is no tomorrow. We know that spiny-tails do eat some protein, but it is good to see that he prefers his veggies.

: : I was just curious if anyone could give me an exact species identification for this little guy so I can pass this information onto potential adopters. Thanks!
