::Has anyone successfully treated kidney failure or kidney related problem in iguanas?::
yes! by some miracle (+ ALOT of intense care) iZ is recovering from major kidney probs ...
briefly: he had emergency surgery in nov. due to an obstruction by a foreign object ... once inside the vet discovered that his bladder was HUGE + filled with chunky, gunky stuff, his kidneys were also HUGE and were so swollen they were pressing on his colon which caused the obstruction ... kidney biopsy showed massive kidney disease + some damage due to an undetected (+ therefore untreated) 'minor' systemic bacterial infection ...

ok ~ first i have to get this off my chest ... i am horrified at the diet this ig has been on ... not to mention that it hasn't been eating for a *month* + she thought he was hibernating ... (*SCREAM!!!!*) ... if she truly wants to save this ig, she MUST be willing to toatlly throw out everything she has been doing or she might as well put him to sleep now and spare him any more pain ... ok, that said ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i can not stress this next point strongly enough:
ig blood tests do NOT always show kidney problems!!!!!
iZ's blood work before surgery in no way indicated kidney problems, let alone the massive problems that were found when he was opened up!!!!
treatment ideas??? this is what worked for iZ ~ a competent ig vet! the ig very likely needs to be on Baytril, preferably daily injections, not oral ...
she said the calcium levels were ok, but what is the phosphorus level???? very probably it is high ... that can be treated with twice daily oral Amphojel ... ( iZ was on this for 6 wks before his blood levels returned to normal)
she *must* get that ig on a more acceptable diet, NOW!
*LOTS* of pedialyte!!! 20cc per kilo per day MINIMUM ... done in 2 diff. doses, morning + evening ...
the ig *MUST* pee *EVERY DAY* ... even if it takes an hour long soak in the tub ...
need to take calorie consumption into consideration ... baby food + juice won't come close to providing enough calories to allow the ig to heal ... you need to use something like "Ensure" ...
~~~~~~~~~~
i have to add that i took the week off work after iZ's surgery to care for him ... the 1st 4 days he got a drink and was encouraged to pee *every 4 hours* ... after that it was every 8 hours for a week ... then just morning + evening ...
iZ's doc did not expect him to make it thru the surgery, let alone to actually heal + be thriving the way he is now ... his kidneys had felt like tennis balls ... they've now returned to normal size + you can't feel them any more (which is as it should be)... he's back to eating solid food (tho he is *still* on a special high-calorie mush i make) and has regained 2 of the 4 pound he lost ... his doc is in awe of iZ ... if iZ wasn't such a stubborn baby, he wouldn't have made it this far ... + as long as iZ stays stubborn + fights to be healthy, i will do everything i can to help him ... point here is ... getting that woman's ig healthy is NOT gonna be an easy or an overnight thing! it's been over 3 months + iZ still needs special care + special diet and he is still not back to his old self yet ... is she willing to put that much work into it????
ok ~ rambled enough ... best wishes + good luck!!!
