In Reply to: Antibacterial soap ........................To use or not to use? That is the question. posted by Thumper on February 14, 2000 at 18:53:45:
yes n' no.
antibact. soap is technically good, because it obviously kills the bacteria.
BUT, it may cause skin irritation as well as at the eyes of the animals.
you know that Johnson n' Johnson's Tear Free soap/shampoo? It's great! Doesn't bother the ig, nor the human hand. Salmonella is inside most, if not all, repties and amphibians. NutriBAc is said to get rid of salmonella (ask the vet).
Remember to always keep the animal and cage clean EVERY DAY!!! not once a week like some people do, which i find inhumane and disgusting (would you like to shower once a week?).
after giving the ig a bath, the KIDS can use the antibact. soap with hot water. but on the ig, there's always the danger of a splash, ingestion, etc., especially with kids. play it safe and simple. as long as the conditions are kept clean, disinfected, and done with common sense, the danger of salmonella is minimized.
antibact. soap may be good, but there's always a risk involved, so why use it with the animal, while you can use something else on it, and still use the antibact. on your kids' hands?
NEUTROGENA makes a antibact. "soap" that is alcohol-free!!! that may do the trick.
always supervise the kids while handling/washing the iguana.
this is what i always did, and had no problems whatsoever.
anymore questions, just post'em up! they're always welcome here!
tell us how it goes.

: My vet said I could wash the igs with Dial antibacterial soap to minimize the risk of salmonella poisoning. She said to make certain to rinse the ig thoroughly, but otherwise, this was a harmless way to help the ig and the kids.
: After looking back through some old posts, I see where there was a question as to whether these types of soaps were poisonous to igs. What's the latest scoop?
: Thanks, in advance, for the information.
