Don't know where you read about it, Joan, but the ? came up some time back on the IML and it came from a girlfriend of a survivalist. Answer as I recall was that there was a risk of salmonella & you'd need to boil them (probably could nuke) AND it was far easier to crush a Tums than to mess with egg shells ;o)
