the reasoning is also that very young kids don't have as strong an immune system as adults do and therefore are less able to fight off an infection.....they are also more likely to not remember to wash their hands (or not wash them thoroughly ) and then stick their hands in their mouth, etc.....
not all igs carry salmonella .... just like not all chickens do .... but it IS VERY LIKELY that they have it and while the vet can test the feces, it is SUPPOSEDLY not conclusive ....
Dial soap, lots of water and vigorous hand washing WILL kill the germs .... IMHO the zoo-med (and other brands) of hand-sanitizer are a waste of money ....but IF used they SHOULD NOT be used IN PLACE OF proper hand washing - (i work in a hospital and wash mine 50 zillion times a day ....!)
