: Each tube contains a small amount of mercury. Yes, mercury!(unless they have redesigned light tubes in the last 5 years) When I was working in a highrise building, it was required that this lighting tube be disposed of properly (hazardous waste) but the building had been throwing them in the compacter for years, but when we started a retro fitting of almost every floor with new fixtures, it was decided that we'd have the company take the tubes. The reason, if the EPA would of found out about how they were getting rid of the bulbs before, we would of been shut down and had a full contamiated site by the loading docks.
: I would, in my opinion, remove everything out of the room and if anything was on the floor I would either wash it (outside) or throw it away. Once the room is cleared out, I'd vaccum the whole floor and then throw the vaccum bag away. Next clean the floor with a mild bleach/water mix. Then you should be ready to move everything back in.
