Portland, Maine -- While clowns may be on hand to celebrate Petco's arrival in Portland, those familiar with the company's abysmal record of animal care aren't amused. Within the past several months, former employees, current employees, and customers of Petco stores across the United States have complained to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals about conditions for animals. Their claims include:

sick and injured animals denied needed veterinary care and employees ordered to place them in freezers to die;

animals starved simply because they are to be used as "snake food";

incompatible animals placed together, causing fighting and cannibalization; and

cages with feces caked so thick it can't be scraped off.

Petco's continued assurances that it "has policies" concerning humane handling of animals have not slowed complaints from concerned employees. PETA is contacting humane law enforcement authorities regarding those cases we believe constitute cruelty to animals and is asking anyone who witnesses animals being mistreated in Petco to immediately contact local authorities and PETA.
