They are not super protected, They are only listed as CITES Appendix II just like the green iguana, There are hundreds of thousands of them alive in the world today. There are way more of these that for instance many species of cyclura, which are given the highest protection and listed as CITES I.

But no, they are not available in the pet trade so I doubt if this guy has one.
