: I am very close to one of my cousins. My cousin (who I call "Sis") has an iguana. His name is Baby. He in many ways WAS her baby, even though he is now a sub-adult iguana at the age of approx. 3 yrs old.
: As everyone knows, it is very hard to raise iguanas from hatchling size. My cousin knew what she was getting into before she ever got involved in Baby's life. After all, she was the foster mom for my own iguana for a year before Baby entered our lives.
: Growing up with an iguana is a tough job for anybody, even for the most knowledgable people. We are not in control of the lives of others, but we can control the quality of lives in which we are responsible for.
: This little iguana named Baby had a rough start with MBD, but he pulled through just fine with Sis's hard work, loving care and patience. They also endoured the pain and agony involved with breeding season aggressions together and other misc. adventures. My cousin spent all of her love and devotion to Baby's care and cared for him as if he was her own son. She cared about every aspect of his life, and he made her laugh as well as cry.
: They were quite the pair I always thought. She even took his care so seriously that she took him to the vet 2 weeks ago because he had coughed. Have you ever seen an iguana cough? Me neither. Sis, being as cautious as she was, requested to have blood work done to make sure everything was ok. All blood tests found that he was a happy, healthy ~3 yr old iguana and
: there was nothing to worry about.
: Last night, something drastic happened. He had turned black and very limp. The inside of his mouth was very pale white-gray. She called me and we decided to meet at the emergency clinic. It was around 10pm I think. After x-rays, examinations, etc, the vet could find nothing out of the ordinary. Everything should have been fine...but, it wasn't. The doctor gave him some
: fluids and antibiotics, but Baby didn't take it too well. We were then allowed to see Baby on request. As he lay there dark, limp and barely breathing, I was watching closely and thought that he had stopped breathing completely. Sis ran to get the vet and he put Baby on oxygen and gave him steroids because he wasn't responding at all. At this point, it was hard for us not to cry.
: Half an hour past midnight (I suppose), the doctor told us that he still was not responding and that he was sorry that he didn't make it. After his post-mortem exam, the reason of death was inconclusive.
: Baby will always be in our thoughts and our hearts. We thank the doctor that did everything he could to try and save Baby's fragile life. Sometimes you can try to play God by attempting to save a life, but when God decides it is time...it's time, and there is nothing more we can do. Life is so precious...
: Give your little ones a big hug tonight and think about how much their lives mean to you. Baby's life meant so much to Sis, her fiance John, and myself.
