I stand corrected, funny how people look at things differently, I'zs mom your right, knowing what to expect is better than being scared every time.
: remember that you are *alot* bigger than Slater + it's just gonna take a while for him to learn he can trust you ... if i'm remembering right, you've had him about a month? that's not really very long at all, as far as igs go ... also remember, they *are* wild animals + so there's alot more effort + time (+ patience!) involved than with something like a puppy (who seeem to instinctively *trust* as opposed to igs who instinctively *don't trust*) ...
: i'd stick to a routine, same things at the same time so Slater can learn *what* to expect ... he may not *like* the things he's expecting (like the tub) but if he *knows* to expect it, he won't be afraid *everytime* you pick him up that you're gonna stick him in water ... he'll know when bath time is ... and protesting a bath is different than being scared every time ...
: stick with using *very little* water in the tub til he gets more used to it ... don't put enough in that he floats cuz it feels like he has no control ... igs are excellent swimmers, but they don't seem to realize that right away ... *grin* ... iZ was 3' long when he moved in with me and it took *months* to get him adjusted to baths!!! i started out having to just about get in the tub *with* him, had my whole arm dangling over the tub edge so he could hold on to me and not really be all the way in the water ... that improved to him just holding onto my hand and finally to him being "ok" with being in there ... this is one of those things that you just need alot of patience and some more time ... oh ... one other thing, iZ still hates the sound of the tub faucet running, it freaks him out! so fix the bath up before you put Slater in ...
: when you go to pick him up, try not to "loom" over him, it's scary for them ... try to be at the same level or lower than Slater ... i've discovered with iZ, that it works alot better if i pick up him back end first, rather than the mouth end ... i put my hand under the base of his tail/vent so his back legs can grab onto my arm and then with the other hand reach *under* his chest and pick him up ... once he's got a grip on my arm with his legs, he doesn't feel so vunerable, like he's gonna fall ...
: believe it or not, some day Slater may actually *like* baths! iZ has been known to soak in the tub for an hour some nights!!! tho other nights, 5 minutes and he's *out* ... *grin*
: hang in there!
