i'm trying to see the bad side of this and i can't find one ... i see only positive ... they are pointing out that reptiles are *NOT* as easy to care for as dogs/cats ... they've pointed out that you need to pay special attention to *how* you care for them for your own health ... they're trying to stop fairs, etc from giving away those cute baby reptiles that'll die after suffering for months in improper housing with improper food ... they've pointed out that iguanas are *NOT* a good idea for people who have young children ...

these are all things that *we* already know ... but the vast majority of the public, doesn't ... this is *not* gonna stop serious ig + other reptile lovers from having reptiles ... but *maybe* it will stop those impulse buyers who see that cute little bright green iggy + his set up for $20 and take him home ... maybe it will cause the parents of the 10 yo kid to say "NO, you can't have an iguana" ... what's wrong with that????

and there *is* alot of hoopla in the media about salmonella and chicken + other meat! all those service announcements to thoroughly cook your food??? all those anti-bacterial cleaners??? they're feeding on people's fears ... but they make them *THINK* ... oh ... and eggs are prone to salmonella too ... no more egg nog + home made mayonnaise!!!! too risky ... *grin*

iZ moved in with me cuz the crazy woman that had him had seen a news story (20/20 or something) and she immediately freaked cuz she had a 2yo grandchild ... she got rid of iZ the very next day ... i think she'd have killed him if i hadn't taken him in ... my point is, people like that shouldn't have reptiles + they certainly don't deserve them ...

and BTW ... salmonella is *usually* a self-limiting disease ... if you or i get it, we're prob'ly just gonna have cramps + diarrhea for a couple days and then it ends ... the problems occur when very young children get exposed because their immune system is not as strong ... (this also includes elderly people and any immune-compromised peeps) ... *however* ... i work in a Pediatric ICU, i've seen what salmonella can do to a child ... we've had maybe 3 kids in the last couple years with sepsis due to salmonella ... it *IS* scary! it *CAN* kill ... (BTW, none of the 3 had reptiles in their house, i asked!) ... and meningitis??? that's even scarier ... your extremities lose their blood supply and parts of your body fall off ... toes, fingers, etc ...

*BUT* ... back to reality ... these are definitely worse case scenarios ... but ... it will only stop people who aren't intelligent enough to have reptiles from having them ... it's not gonna stop people who care enough to learn about their reptiles from having and caring for them ...

and ... everyone i know, who knows i have an ig, has pointed out the dangers of salmonella to me ... *sigh* ... they truly expected me to say "OH!" and get rid of iZ when they informed me of the dangers ... *DUH* ... for months, my mom sent me clippings of articles ... oh well ... it only proves my point that none of them are ig-worthy people ...

which brings us to a reminder to thoroughly clean your tub with bleach solution if your ig uses it for a pooping place ...

*whew* ... *stepping of MY soapbox now* ... my fingers are crampin' up! *grin*

time to go feed iZ ("i'm orange + i'm grouchy")
