In Reply to: Which is better, wire cage or enclosed cage??? posted by IG27 on January 07, 2000 at 21:40:52:
Hi IG27,
I like the more enclosed cages to retain the heat. I live in Idaho and right now our high for the day is 27 degrees. All our lizard cages have 3 solid sides and a plexiglass front. One cage has a permanent solid wood top with the lighting built in. That cage has ventilation holds on each side with hardware cloth covering the holes. We have one cage that has hardware cloth across the entire top with the heat lamps on the hardware cloth. Controlling the heat in this cage is the most difficult (can't image why). This cage will be modified a few months down the road.
In the summer we just use lower wattage lights to retain the same temps.
Below is a link to many different cages people have used. This may give you some ideas.
Another thing to consider is that of the humidity. If you and the other animals don't need that high of humidity, you'll want to be able to keep most of the humidity for the iguana inside its cage. Also you will want the cage to be flexible (just finding that out for myself). Basking shelves that can raise or lower as needed and still be sturdy.
Joan (by the way...welcome)
