Your iguana has a different digestion track and these hard non-digestable items can impact or slowly kill your iglet or adult iguana. Your iguana has an area called a hind-gut, this is small pockets in the digestion track that catches food and processes it.
Let's say your iguana eats sand, when this sand travels down the digestion track, it hits these pockets. The pockets catch the sand.....and the sand sits there. As more and more of the sand or anything else non-digestable is eaten, these pockets can start to fill up with items that can't be processed. Once the hind gut is full of stuff that can't be digested, then regular food passes by this area causing a loss of important nutritional values from the food and slowly your iguana will starve to death.
