Wow! I go off for 3 days and this place gets busy!! I can at least help with the question on Baytril ;o)
Not too long ago this subject came up on the Iguana Mail List after someone cross posted it from a canine mailing list. As I understand it after the fur and scales settled, the dog that had gone blind was ALREADY having vision problems and was being treated for some ailment. The makers of Baytril DID fund research in to whether or not receiving baytril prior to losing his sight played any part in the dog losing his sight. I wrote the company directly to see what they had to say before running around wringing my hands because most of us who have had a sick reptile have dosed them with baytril! Here is the company's reply:
Bayer Corporation Statement Regarding
Companion Animal Baytril
As a responsible manufacturer of both human and animal medicines, Bayer cares greatly about the safety of all our products and the safety of our patients, both human and animal. Any potential incident regarding a product is taken
seriously and investigated thoroughly to ensure that patient well being is not compromised.
It has come to our attention that some pet owners and veterinary
practitioners have expressed a concern regarding vision loss in pets treated with Baytril. Recently a story has spread through the internet via e-mail lists that has prompted widespread discussions on the safety of Baytril in multiple species.
Prior to approval of Baytril tablets by the Food and Drug Administration in 1988, extensive safety studies were conducted in dogs and cats. The drug met FDA's comprehensive safety requirements. Additionally, in excess of 1.5 billion doses of Baytril have been used safely in millions of pets worldwide
during the past decade. Baytril is safe and effective when used properly.
Veterinary Services is thoroughly investigating all reports of vision loss. For any single report there is no absolute certainty that the product caused the effect. To date, no correlation between the use of Baytril and vision
loss has been confirmed. We continue to work closely with veterinary ophthalmologists to investigate reported cases and to gain insight as to the specific cause of the acute blindness.
If you have any questions regarding the safety or efficacy of Baytril or any of our other animal health products, please contact your veterinarian.

Hopefully, this helped answer Thumper's question ;O)
