could it be that the sound is more of a gurgle, than a growl? Is there excess fluid (bubbling or frothing) coming from the nose or mouth? The closest I can come is the possibility of a respiratory infection. The book also mentioned that a lot of the symtoms for a respiratory infection could also indicate possible anemia or internal parasites.
All the symtoms for a respiratory infections are:
Excessive sneezing
Obvious difficulty in breathing
Abnormally rapid respiratory rate
Bubbling or frothy secretions coming from the mouth or nostrils
Lethargy
Loss of appetite
skin color change to the darker hues
It may be nothing, but I would still call a vet and see what they think. Better to be safe than sorry. In the mean time, keep your ig warm so he doesn't become chilled.
