I have some unfortunate news for everyone who has helped out with Elmo, the sick desert iguana. As I write this he is on his way back to the vet - things are looking very grave for Elmo.
Despite what seemed to be a bit of a recovery, he has since 2 days ago, stopped eating, will not come out of his hiding area and has turned a dark grey. It sounds like Elmo is now severely dehydrated, even though he was sucking up the water like there was no tomorrow.
I have strongly recommended some bloodwork to be done - this sounds more like a bacterial infection at this point, than him just trying to hibernate. She has done everything right for Elmo. He was hospitalized a while ago, with similar symptoms and recovered, with the help of antibiotics and fluids.
There is the possibility that he is a wild-caught specimen, imported here to Canada, and then sold at a major pet-store under the pretense that he was captive-born. But these problems have been with him since day one. Hmmmmmmm...anyone else suspicious?
Anyways, Elmo really really needs everyone to pull together for him now more than ever. Everyone's support over the past few weeks is extremely appreciated - Elmo's owner is so pleased to have so many "friends" out there! Let's keep our fingers crossed! I will keep you posted.
