Not to long ago, crickets were a recommended food intake for iguanas, then it turns out that feeding animal protein will cause kidney failure. So now it is recommended not to feed any animal protein.
I'm sure in the wild iguana get some animal protein by accident or if there regular food supply is not available, but I don't believe there is any study on how much would be to much. Would a cricket a month be OK? The occasional bite of pizza, turkey, or cat food be enough to do any damage? Who knows? What is known is that there is a point where animal protein does do damage and that is a fact. Tell your friends that they are playing with fire at the expensense of their ig and the cost could be its life later on.
If they want to give a treat, they should try other things. I use different items and only in the afternoon AFTER Sneakers has eaten all her good quality food. She will get a bite of banana, bread, dandelion flower(when there in the yard), and lettuce(don't flame). Lettuce is nothing but basically water, but Sneakers loves it. This is again AFTER she has eaten her good food. A couple times a month when she is out with us I will hand feed her just a few bites of lettuce.
