DAILY MAIL (Hull, UK) 11 March 99 Reptile fanatic forms Iguana Rescue Society
Iguana fanatic Andrew Phelps fell in love with the scaly creatures after spending hours in the reptile houses at safari parks and zoos.
And he is so fond of them that he, and wife Vicky, have set up a club dedicated to the leathery limbed animals.
They have formed the National Iguana and Rescue Society in a bid to combat the domestication of the species, and already have 60 members.
Andrew said: 'Females are more friendly than males but any iguana that lies on your lap and goes to sleep is too tame.'
His own five foot Iguana, which he got from a rescue centre, was given the name Damage after biting off his previous owner's nose.
But Andrew said as long as you respect iguanas they are very friendly and he has been known to take Damage to the park on a lead.
'Basically they are wild animals,' he said.
'Damage is very friendly but they do all have their moments.'
The couple, who live in Gloucester, have a sanctuary just over the border in Wales where they collect unwanted pets from around the country.
One of the iguanas they have rescued is five-and-a-half foot long George, whose owner gave him up when he moved to Australia.
Andrew also revealed that many pet shops don't give adequate advice when selling them.
'When I bought my one the shop owner did not even tell my it needed ultra violet light,' he said.
'Iguanas must have UV light or they get rickets and die a slow painful death.'
