In Reply to: what about alfalfa "rabbit pellets" ????? nm posted by iZ's mom on November 29, 1999 at 21:36:11:
Well rabbit pellets & alfalfa pellets are two different things. Rabbit pellets have a crude protein of 16% or higher consists of mainly alfalfa "meal" but also wheat, barley,SOY and ANIMAL PROTEIN. Use it as substrate, add it to your ig salad over time and bingo kidney probs.Sure it'll take years but why fuel the fire. Alot of people who buy rabbit pellets think they are buying alfalfa pellets which couldn't be further from the truth. Most sites on rabbit husbandry do NOT reccomend feeding ~rabbits~ pellets only because these pellets are high protein meant to fatten em up for market or breeding, increased production. Popular ig diets that recommend alfalfa pellets as part of a daily ig diet really need to caution consumers that Rabbit Pellets are a no-no.The only 100 % alfalfa pellets sold at feed stores local to me are horse pellets.Feed store people will give you the ingredient list of the pellets you buy...but ya need to ask. If buying from a pet store ...read the ingredient list carefully and make sure you are paying for what you know to be pure alfalfa nothing else.Usually feed stores by the pellets as bulk grain and re-bag them there at the store for distribution to other stores or to customers, the feed store people out here have always been pretty helpful with a simple "what's in it" type ?
If anything alfalfa hay as a substrate (altho not practical..getting wet,^ fungus;mold) is better than pellets at least you KNOW you have 100% alfalfa in the event ig eats it. Hope this makes some sense
Nitey nite
