They can lay eggs whether you breed or not (just like chickens).
As far as picking out a nice one, I don't know. My first one was given to me and he was a sweetheart from day one. My second one I picked from a tank of igs, and he was very lively, yet calm when I held him-- so I thought "he'll be easy to tame". However, he was quite a challenge-- though he never bit or got extremely nasty, but he would freak out a lot and whip & smack your hand away when you tried to touch him. The reason he stayed so still when I held him in the store was because he was playing dead-- petrified! He would do that sometimes when we got him home too (you could literally pose him). Now he is normal, although he still is much more full of piss N vinegar than our last male. He should prove to be a real challange when he reaches puberty (very strong willed). So the moral is, you just never know what you are getting. But whatever it is, you can usually tame it down to a certain level.
