It depends on how enclosed your cage is. I use the night reptile bulbs ($4.50) online. My cage does not have a lot of air exposure so one 60watt bulb keeps the whole cage pretty warm (he doesn't have to sleep under it) In my older cage set up I did use a regular heating pad on the lowest setting with a towel wrapped around it (I've seen awful belly burns so I wouldn't take any chance). Although the heating pad works, I much prefer the night bulb because it heats the entire enclosure and there is much less risk of burns or God forbid, a fire.
