In Reply to: Hello, if there's anyone in the Portland Oregon USA area who wants to rescue some very sick baby (prob wc) igs..... posted by Laura Z on October 27, 1999 at 15:13:26:
Laura...with over 1 million iglets coming into the states each year..majority of them being sick, diseased, stressed...by the time they get to PetStupid or PetCOmplacent...they are dyin fast. At a little more than $2.oo each for these imported iglets ...most pet shops do nothing but have a for sale sign up. UVB is not EVEN required because of the "high turnover" yeah right...turnover dead! And forget getting a vet for a $2.00 iglet...its just not cost effective! What the others posted although sounding very cruel is true...getting the Pet store to comply with decent husbandry is an exhaustive and never ending battle. You may make a difference in these little iglets lives right now...you just may be able to save em...but what about the others that come in twice a month from the same jobber. No doubt about it..these are w/c imports. You letting them die...is NOT gonna stop petshops from buying iglets either!! They can afford it! After jacking up the price for 1 say 10.00 (there's 5 dead iglets covered right there!) Then they can sell $500.00 dollars of crap that they don't need to uneducated first time ig owners..they gotcha! Im sure you know all about this but I like rambling about it...have been to many such stores, have ranted & raved....and once in a great while I make a difference...majority its to deaf ears.
Here's what I'd do....Contact your local Herpetological Society ask for guidance.Their representatives will more than likely visit the store. Get a print out of MK's one page Iguana care sheet...hand it to the manager of the store and inform them that you are disgusted by the condition of the reptiles and are giving them 1 week to comply with husbandry standards as outlined in MKs one page sheet thingie. If they fail to comply you will be contacting Animal Control and the Health Dept. Have phone numbers & contacts handy. Be prepared to follow through! PetCo has had numerous complaints of their care for iguanas in the past this is just another drop in the cesspool they've created. I commend you Laura...but others here have given you the exact same response Melissa Kaplan has given others in this similar situations. In other words..bless yer heart...but ya ain't seen nuttin YET!
Go Get Em Laura....If I lived a little further North...I'd pickett in front of their store with ya!
