Hi,
This is a very common escape strategy in many aborial animals, especally reptiles and amphibians. You probably noticed that when the Ig hit the ground (horrid SPLAT! sound), he was spread out as far as he could get, cutting down air speed and spreading the impact over as large an area of his body as possible.
I have seen grey squrrils, snakes, fence lizzards and others do this.
