I will try and kill two birds(subjects) with one stone. Our igs have figured out how to
open the door of their cage. Apparently, the larger two igs have figured out
that by repeated pressing and bouncing against the door of the cage, they can
cause the spring latch to unhinge and thus open the door. The first time, I figured
I had left the door open, when I came home and found the door wide open and two igs
out and about. However, the next time, when we were out of town, the igs had done it
again. My father had been house watching the igs ( along with the cats and the monitor)
and had reported to me that when he came over to feed the igs, the door to the cage was
wide open.
Fortunately, being expert ig hunters, we found all the igs when we returned and I put two
new safety latches on the door. The igs spent all morning shoving and jiggling the door
trying to open it, but with out success.
I personally don't think that they figured it out mentally, but by constant repeated behavior
they got what they wanted.
We also have three cats. Sometimes the curiouser of the three will occasionally go up and look at
an ig if the ig is in the cat's favorite high placed sleeping spot. The ig always wins, without any
puffing, bobbing or tail whipping. The cat's got a lesson with our first ig who was 3 years old and
according to the old owner, used to bully their dogs around. So the cats already know to leave the igs
alone. The igs usually just go where they want, regardless of whether there is a cat in the way or not.
The cats always move out of the way.
That's the way it works at our house, but it is purely anecdotal.
