Well, I went to a rescue page and saw several I was interested in. This one was in the state of Virginia, a female, and small enough for me to handle at 3 feet. Remember I'd said because of my size a female was a better idea for me? Her name was Roni and she was listed as healthy, sweet, very tame, but the person just couldn't keep her. Once I contacted the rescue page and she passed my email on, we started "talking." So Wednesday she gave Roni a big meal and water time, then packed her very well, and mailed her Express Mail(the only option due to my location). The box arrived at the local post office this morning and they held it for me at the counter so she wouldn't have to spend the day in a mail truck.
When I opened the pillowcase I was nervous because you never know how freaked out an animal is going to get in shipping you know. But she walked calmly out and began checking things over. Not even a tail twitch. She did try to sit on my head a couple of times(she does not fit), then she headed for my son's room. He has bunk beds and that was cool, then she waded into the stuffed animals for a look. Since she'd never seen a dog before and my poodle is huge(106 pounds), I did cage her before letting him in. Neither seems to care about the other yet. So right now she's under the lamp and I just got her water and breakfast ready, and then we'll try for another explore later. She's in remarkable shape and was very obviously well cared for, aside from her smaller size, she didn't even break a nail or spike on the trip.
Oh yeah. Roni is toilet trained. Her mommy sent a wire rack to put on the toilet for her to sit on, and she even sent a bunch of seeds so I can grow the greens I haven't got access here to. Only kind of mustard/collard etc we see up here is the canned kind. Sigh.
But anyway; I feel very lucky to have found one that isn't deathly ill, or abused/neglected, and so we have a happy ending to that story....
To top it off, I also found a home for another one, a hatchling. That one arrived last week and moved yesterday to it's new home.
