TIMES PICAYUNE (New Orleans, Louisiana) 05 May 01 Zoo seeking stolen iguanas
New Orleans (AP): Audubon Zoo officials are trying to recover two iguanas that were apparently stolen last week.
Zoo staffers reported the theft of the iguanas, named Ziggy and Cleopatra. after discovering they were missing on Friday. Each lizard weighs about 15 pounds and is four to five feet long.
Ziggy. a common green iguana, is worth a few hundred dollars. A piece of Ziggy's tail was apparently cut off in a struggle with a thief, general curator Dan Maloney said.
Cleopatra is a rarer rhinoceros iguana and is worth about $1,000.
Sarah Burnette, the zoo's public relations director, said she believes more than one person was involved in the theft because the animals are large and were removed from exhibits surrounded by plexiglass barriers.
Ziggy's abductor left behind a shirt and a pocketknife.
The iguana theft is the first animal theft at the zoo in 10 years, Burnette said. A bog turtle was stolen about five years ago. It turned up later in a lagoon.
