I have so MANY questions....that I STILL need answers to but a few off the top of my head is:
1) Exactly how much sun exposure do green iguanas require a month that will guarantee adequate Vitamin D3 synthesis so that MBD does not become an issue throughout the year?
2) Exactly how much humidity at 80-100% a day is required so my green iguanas do not suffer from dehydration and renal disease?
3) It is said that green iguanas cannot utilize oral Vitamin D3 (as in alfalfa pellets and most vitamin & calcium supplements) and has been implicated in soft tissue mineralization and causes of kidney and liver damage. Is this information correct? and if so why can't green iguanas utilize oral Vitamin D3?
4) Being herbivores (as with human vegans) would green iguanas benefit from supplemented Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) since its essential for nerve function, offset anemias and paralysis and only available from animal meats and products?
5) Doesn't oral Vitamin D3 as in alfalfa pellets & most vitamin and calcium supplements come from animal sources (i.e. fish oils, eggs, dairy products) I thought green iguanas weren't supposed to have animal products?
6) If I feed my iguanas frozen~~>thawed PLANT matter, why do I have to supplement with Brewer's yeast or Vitamin B1 when plant matter is an insignificant source of thiamin to begin with (with the exception of fresh watermelon and a tiny bit in legumes which I don't feed anyway)?
7) My vet suggested that I do NOT have to have annual bloodwork done on my iguanas this year when they had their physical/wellcheck but said every 3 years is fine. Both of my green iguanas are 6 years old and this makes me kind of nervous...should I find a new vet or go with this advice?
8) Would you recommend the use of ESU's 7% compact flourescents (screw-in lamps) for green iguanas uvb needs?
That's it for NOW....thanks!
