Maybe all the Iguana owners should get together and push to have Snakes and other lizards ban!!! Your reasoning for the iguana ban is just short of banning all reptiles. I'm sure there is plenty of non-knowledgeable people who have purchased snakes and other reptiles; that in the end have killed them, not knowing how to care for them properly.
Just how many topical snakes get released into the wild in the Northern states and wind up dying?? I'm sure it's more then anyone of us knows about. How many snakes die from resp. infections? <--and how much of it was caused by improper temps in environment?
Mike, I guess what I am saying is, I could find every reason in the book ( in my opinion) why any reptile should be ban, but is it fair to people who know how to care for them? Maybe this group should focus on teaching common sense......because common sense would tell you, you need to read and study information on a reptile BEFORE purchasing such reptile!!!! If you or anyone else has concerns for the sell of a reptile maybe you should focus on a required license for ownership......instead of flat out banning such species!!!!
Don't get me wrong.....I think iguanas are NOT for EVERYONE.....but I won't go so far as to say NO ONE can own one. There's plenty of people out there that can raise and give an iguana a wonderful and fulfilling life in captivity. They should NOT have this right taken away from them.
I would boycott any Herp Soc. who takes such action against any reptile division. If anyone of the Virginia Herp Soc.(which I am a member of two of them) would do such action, then I would no longer be a member and would boycott any function they may put on!!!
Point your energy towards education......instead of LAWS......but if you must seek laws....stop the importing of iguanas into this country instead of backing laws to ban them.
Suggestion on slowing down production of iguanas. Ban importation of iguanas and put a cap on captive breeding in the US by license. Cap meaning captive breeders can only hatch a set number of eggs per year......and all eggs must be registered and tracked to resaler. I believe the price per iguana would go up to around 150.00 to 250.00, if this was done. You won't get too many impulse buyers this way.
