In Reply to: Learn this...every iguana owner probably owns a BAD iguana care book! posted by Derek on September 18, 1999 at 18:23:32:

:I totally agree. The majority of books sold at pet stores are still way outdated with their info. The books I currently have are the J.Hatfield book ( a lot of herpeotologists denounce it as fluffy because of all those personal tidbits, but I think they are missing the point; a pet owners's book can be informative and still fun), Iguana Iguana by Dr. Frye and The Iguana Owner's Manual published by Advanced Vivarium Systems. That's really all that's out there as far as practical husbandry goes. I have prehensile tailed skinks and no igs, but their veggie diet follows along the same lines: collards, turnip greens, dandelion, mustard greens, some carrot and squashes, occasional fruits like mango or fresh figs, occasional soaked alfalfa hay for roughage. That's just a tight summary. I tend to run off at the keyboard when it comes to diet! Sometime long ago I entered a long post on my thoughts on igs and carnivorous foods. No one responded. I can not repeat the whole thing, but in a nutshell, I said I felt no herbivore in nature is truly 100% so, nor is any carnivore. But that the average ig owner could never understand how to give a teeny amount of animal protein without overdoing it, since in fat-and-spoiled American, meats are too easy to come by and everyone is convinced that any creature who isn't eating meat daily can't possibly be eating right. Therefore, it is best not to even begin to put the idea of feeding animal foods into the mind of a prospective iguana owner. My idea of moderate would be one or two feedings of a few insects, every 2 or 3 months tops! My post also gave examples like hippos eating carcasses of other hippos and of crocs, and the red deer of Scotland eating dead seabirds. This has all been documented. Anyway, I applaud your strong opinion and your willingness to speak out. I'm sure your ig is very happy.
