Hi Michelle,
I am trying to find out the same questions you have. I think Babyherp has helped me figure out that a Rose of Sharon IS a *variety* of Hibiscus and it IS edible. They are not necessarily the same thing. There are hardy hibiscus and also tropical. The Rose of Sharon happens to be hardy, and can live through winters, but it is not the only sort of hardy hibiscus there is.
Turns out that the leaves are better for feeding Iguanas than the actual flowers are. I wouldn't have known that, without Babyherp's help.
I really don't know much more about it all yet. I'm still doing some checking and some research.
I'll be sure to post if I find out anything different.
