: I have read so many horror stories about iguanas biting. Do they all bite? It has me worried about my decision to keep her. I do not want a family member to get hurt. What do you think?
Hi Annette,
The Green Garoot came to us as a rescue by my daughter. He was not in the best condition, abused, malnourished, a Hot Rock burn on his belly, and with the disposition of an angry Rattelsnake (I keep mostly hot snakes and know about a lot about this).
It has taken a hell of a lot of attention and a couple of bites, but now he is a really laid-back lizard, roaming free in the house. No cage at all.
The thing is that you got to pay attention to your animal and it's every single day without fail. Every morning, he is given a warm bath and takes a dump (usually huge) at that time. Then he goes back to his tree (propped up in a corner of the living room). There is a shelf below with food and water' and a UV light above. Am also rigging up a heat source. Winter's coming.
And so forth.
In short, this is not an easy animal to keep. A properly kept Iguana will require time and attention every day, even more so than a dog or cat. On the other hand, we find G.G. a most rewarding member of the household.
I hope you keep your Iguana. The advice you get on this Forum will help you a lot. And if it bites you, hey, he don't got no pizen! Put a band-aid on it, scold him, scratch the back of his head, and rock on.
