Ziggy bit me once. And it felt like a little pinch and did not even leave a mark. It just startled me. And Ziggy is small but is 8-9 years old. I had another iguana that turned out to be a male that was VERY aggressive and would escape and corner us and actually lunge at us and the dogs. (He never got close enought to bite and I adopted him out to a VERY experienced iguana rescuer who he did bite). Most of the other iguanas, even Ziggy, tail whip first but only when they feel threatened. I have four iguanas in total right now and other than the one bite from Ziggy, they are all nice and even with Ziggy, my son handles them all.
Ziggy is the only one, however, that is not allowed to free roam. The others are tame and LIKE human contact and so they are allowed to free roam from time to time. They do not feel threatened by human hands reaching for them and only tail whip when the dogs come around and get too close.
There are ways to learn to handle iguanas that make them safer to handle and to be around. Just like dogs, if you don't know what you are doing, you can get in trouble.
This forum is the perfect place to learn how to safely handle and socialize your iguana.
