Hey all!
I have a 2+ yr old iggy, he's about 3.5' or so. (haven't measured
him in a few months) Right now he's kept in a wood and wire
cage, it's small for him IMO. 3'x3'x5' I plan on letting
him be a freeroamer. Here's where my temp. problems come in,
the place I am in now is a tiny one bedroom duplex... with my
b/f, the cats, his fish and all my snakes. Wasabi (the iggy)'s
cage is in the living room... I let him out a little, he climbs
up on top his cage and over and across the 75 gallon fish tank
next to it. Problem is, there are no doors in my place, the
kitchen is a small open space right next to his cage and I also
have one of those old gas heaters so there's a large open hole
in the wall under the heater.
I'd like to be able to let him out more so he will tame down a
little more. (he's getting holdable, and likes to be pet, but is semi
territorial in his cage) I can't just let him out tho because
he tries to jump on top the fridge... I don't want him to roam
the floor since he could get behind the stove, behind the
fridge, in the wall by the heater... so many places he could
hide in! There is no bedroom door so I can't let him roam in
there. I was thinking if he was on a leash then at leash i could
sit on the couch with him or take him out in the small backyard.
The bathroom is crappy and has holes in the wall under the sink
so that's out too.
When I got the cage the guy also gave me one of those lizard
leashes that goes over the back legs... only the string would
go over his back... are these ok? I have not tried to use it
yet or put it on him. I don't want to mess up his spikes...
We're all moving later this month (~6 months) and will be going
into a much larger space where he will have his own room to roam
in (the b/f is not happy about that tho since I also want one of
the rooms for a snake room.. he wants to keep the iggy in the
room with the snakes but I say no since the snakes might stress
him (so far they don't seem to) and he could rip out the cords
and stuff for the snakes which woudl be bad). So, eventually
this won't be a probelm but in my imediete need, I'd like to
let him out more cause he is kinda big for his cage but I don't
want him to "get away"... so any hints or ideas would be great,
either about leashes or just in general. thanks mucho!
-April
PS. I've had wasabi since he was ~4 months, and only 4"SVL...
here he is as a baby:
My how time flies! :)
