I've used them (actually "it" since I haven't had to replace it yet) for about a year and a half. I keep it on for about 12-14 hours a day during the tort's non-hibernating months (she's a russian tortoise and can hibernate for up to 9 months of the year!). I have a 100 watt spot in a regular 'ol fixture. Since my tort is only 6' long, I use the lowest wattage, I'm getting the 160 spot for the ig. I keep lamp about 10-12" from the tort which is safe since tortoises can't jump. I don't think you need a diffuser (I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time), mine works fine without one. I'm assuming that a diffuser is that big-ass metal thing that surrounds the bulb on a fixture to reflect forward any light that goes away from the spot area. These bulbs are shaped like reflector light bulbs, so 90% of the light goes forward anyways. The zoo said that it's safe to use just as a heat lamp. I think you will like the colours that will come out of your ig. I noticed that my russian is "happier" with the light. This thing really is great. PS-I've heard that the flood versions of these lights don't produce enough heat. I use the spot, but if you use the flood you might need a heat suppliment.
