Bob...Sand is not good..just cuz igs lick so much and they will ingest it. Ive seen X-rays of reptiles with sand impactions. It may affect the humidity because its so absorbant,moisture will sink right to the bottom. BUT.....
I recently inquired with Long Beach Animal Hospital after visiting their website where they recommend dirt as substrate and got a very nice e-mail from one of the herp vets there.
Not only is dirt recommended as a substrate by them it is HIGHLY recommended and to mist it to increase humidity, cheap, easy to clean. Sterile potting soil or as vet suggested bake regular ole dirt at 400 degrees for 15 minutes to kill microorganisms. Sounded good to me...now all ya need is some collard green, mustard green seeds, maybe a papaya plant....and ya got yerself an independant iguana ;o)
