: Hello! I've noticed you seem to know alot about snakes, so I've got a question for ya.....my sister is interested in getting a snake. She has looked into a ball python, but now she's not so sure. She kind of wants a pet with a little personality, and is not sure a snake is what she's looking for. Can you suggest a snake that might fit the bill? Or, would she be better off to get something totally different? She loves our little ig we have, but she works alot and really wouldn't have the time needed to get involved with that which is the reason she was looking into a snake to begin with. You can post here or e-mail me....maybe then I could just give you her e-mail addy and you could talk to her direct. Any help is appreciated!

: Thanks in advance!

Hi Tracie,

Sorry not to get back quicker - I and G.G. are pretty much lurkers here on this great forum. Questions get answered before we can ask them!

I find it diffult to improve on the suggestions already made.

I will say that any of the Rat / Corn or King snakes would be hard to beat, especally for the price. I suggest a CB, sub-adult that is feeding on thawed rodents. I don't like to feed live - possibility of getting parasites.

For a first snake, I would advise avoiding any and all exotics such as the Ball Pythons. However, a Common (now days called Red Tail) Boa usually does well provided temps can be regulated. These get big, but it takes time. Also, the $$$ ain't too bad.

Lemme give ya something a little off-the-wall: One of the Nerodia Watersnakes! No animal in the world is tougher nor an easier keeper. They thrive on bait minnows and temp changes don't bother them much. This is where I started. Disadvantage: They bite!

Let us know how it comes out. I can mostly be found over on Venomous.
