Kyle my 9 year old who shares the Bearded Dragons we have with me is also very interested in snakes. I have been doing research for over a month now. Two snakes were suggested as good for first time owners.
The first was the rosy boa. They are generally tame and easily handled. They do not get to big either.
The second and the one we are probably going to go with is a corn snake. The snake expert at our local herp society recommended it. They normally are slightly smaller than rosy boas (definitely slimmer). They also are generally really tame. He recommended them over the rosy boas for first time owners because they handle mistakes with care better (not that your sister would make any). They also are more active than the rosy boas who spend a great deal of time tucked away.
Whatever you decide to go with take the time to do all the research first and have everything ready for the animal before you bring it home. That kind of went without saying huh?
Good luck
Kayo
P. S. there is also a beginner snake forum. I haven't checked it out but you might want to.
