: : This is an excerpt from a post on the kingsnake.com boa forum. I was pretty dismayed..... I live in Oregon and at the local pet stores there is an overpopulation of grown iguanas. I read that wild boas eat them and was wondering if I could purchase and feed them to my snake. I have a red tailed boa about a year old now.

Yes.... It is sick! I know that in the wild animals
kill other animals for food, but as captive pets
there is NO need for this. There are a number of
comercial foods out there that one could use insteed
of feeding live animals to "your" pet. This is
where We reptile keepers get a bad name. Everyone
else in the world thinks that we keep them because
we like to watch they kill their prey. And in truth
there are a lot of Herp keepers out there that live
for watching their Snake or Lizard rip another animal
up. This sickings me.... And I do not buy the
old "but that is what they eat in the wild" excuss.
I not only own Cyclura but also have a dog... She is
a Bullmastiff... Now No One on earth would buy
into the "but that is what she eats in the wild"
speach if I started bringing home bady goats or a
fawn or two, so she could eat like her ancestors.
I would have a hard time getting anyone to belive
that I was anything but a monster. I do not know
why anyone would want a pet that had to kill for
a living..... Willow (my sweet Puppy) would not
be that great a companion if she was forced to kill
every other day. It makes it hard for an animal to
be tame if it has to kill daly.
I'm really just going on and on now.... so I
will stop. But I just wanted to say that I feel
that there is NO excuss for these people that like
to play God and watch one animal kill another. As
modern civilized Humans there are just to many other
ways to feeds your pets....
sorry for the tyraid,
Joe III

p.s. in the wild the mouse would
not be locked in cage with
a snake and could RUN away.

p.s.s sorry for the spellings too
I just kind of rolled along.
