Carrie I am so sorry to hear your story. I made many mistakes in the early days. All well meaning but now, I finally have a great diet, good vet care and much more knowledge than I ever dreamed. Most of which is due to others on this forum who have helped me to no end.
Who is this "best on the east coast vet"? Obviously he wasn't "The Best" else he would have run bloods and would have been able to feel (upon body exam) and indeed see that something was wrong.
I too live on the east coast. NY actually, and I drive to NJ about 45 mins to my vet. While not touted as the best he is truelly wonderful and very open to others opinions, even my own. And just for the record, he ALWAYS runs blood panels and fecals upon every exam. Once every 6 mths.
Those who state that it is not necessary and unusual are WRONG!
I'm sorry for your loss. And Good Luck!
