In Reply to: Just got a baby Iguana and need alot of questions answered! PLease Help?!?! posted by Lisa Parks on August 29, 1999 at 15:07:12:
Welcome to the world of iguanas! First off I wan't you to know that your pet will get 5-6 feet long! here are a few tips I can give you.
About books: Most iguana books skip a lot of detail, I know mine did.
Mood: Iguanas when they are scrared can tear you up! If he is not tame by the time it is bigger be prepared for a lot of trips to the emergency room. When an ig gets mad they sometimes change colors but it is impossible to say that your iguana is mad if it turns a certain color you just have to watch yours it is different for all of them. They sort of suck themselfs in and laterally compress their bodies when threaten and thrust their tail about.
Diet: Diet is a vary important thing for an ig check out the link below for more information. greens should consist of about 60% of their diet. You should also get a vitamin and mineral supplement
Nails: you should clip their nails when they get long so he can't scratch you as deaply. for now you should use just regular clippers, not dog nail clippers! when he/she gets older you have to go out and buy some ig clippers. when you cut make sure you have some cornstarch out! If you cut it to close he will bleed to death if you don't stick the nail in some corn starch. Just cut off the very tip of the nail cause you cant cut to deep. You should check into a new heat clipper thing that just rounds it off, but I don't know much about it.
Housing: you need:
1) substrate=some sort of material to put over the bottom of the terriaum. Make sure your pet can not ingest it! and they are allergic to pine i think it is pine atleast and cedar
2)Heat!=get some sort of heat lamp
3)UVB lights=Go to the pet shop and by a full spectrum reptile light. 7%. This is important since they need vitamin d3.
4) A huge cage 6LX6HX3D when he/she gets older you can build one if you need some plans just e-mail me cause i have some nice looking ones.
5) A place to hide. you can buy a half log type of deal at the petstore while you are there getting the UVB lights.
6)something to climb on. Since they are arboreal they need a stick or something to hange out on and bask
here is a link that has helped almost every one I know out.
