A while back, M. Eguro mentioned travelling with his ig. I asked him where he had been and told him where Louie had been. He responded, saying that some of the places Louie had been (see post under "igs on airplanes") , it was illegal and he could have been confiscated or killed. Let me clarify, please. I got Louie a couple of months ago from a Merchant Marine sailor. Charlie (former owner) purchased Louie in Florida as a tiny baby, and has kept him aboard ship for the past 4 years. When Charlie was due to retire back in May, his ship was in Guam before returning to the US mainland. We were discussing pets (I'm a bartender at the Seaman's Club)He told me all about his "baby" and how when he retired next month he was going to build a big habitat at his home in Florida. Well, when he got there, they told him if he brought the ig ashore, it would be confiscated and destoyed, because although it had been purchased in Florida, it had been to places that imports are not allowed from.(grammer check?)SO Charlie signed on, right then, for another 3 months, so he could stay on the ship until it came around to the only person he knew would love his baby as much as he did. Me.
I would NEVER take an animal into a country where it might be confiscated and destroyed. Most of the time animals confiscated by customs are incinerated to destroy any parasites or disease. Unfortunately, they often don't bother to euthanize the animals first!(sad and cruel, but true, even in the US)
I realize you were not trying to flame me but I wanted to clear it up.
Thanks for listening!
PS: I still think Louie has the record!
