Preface: Gina, not doing this to argue with you. Just want to note a little caution. I'm sure you know to be cautious, but not everyone does. :)
For a long time, there has been controversy about whether UVB could come from an incandescent bulb. Some companies have made claims that they have made such a thing, but usually they don't turn out to be quite what was advertised. So, yeah, one needs to make sure the UVB is really there. Gina, I just skimmed Mader's and couldn't find what you were referring to. Could you let me know what page or at least what chapter it's in? I'd appreciate it.
Anyhow, as for the warning about danger to igs: I've heard about the danger of damage to eyes, and it is a relevant concern. There have been anecdotal reports about igs with eye damage. Don't know if it's from this particular bulb, but often the high-ranging UV-bulbs, such as tanning bed lamp bulbs, can and will cause damage. Another concern is dermal burns. Not thermal; dermal refers to skin damage. Not entirely unlike human sunburns, high-range UV-rays can cause some skin damage to iguanas. I'm going to forward this to Anne M. She's got a library of info about UVB in her head. I'll let you all know what she says.
I guess mainly what I'm trying to say is, lets, as a "family" check this one out throughly. Before everyone runs out and buys these. :)
Best,
Jamie/JBug
: Anyone with a large enclosure?? lol Check out this site...regarding high density discharge....mercury vapor lights..yes screw in bulbs (got a porcelin topped fixture?)..tons more uvb output than Zoo-med & others...charts, testimonials,....used by zoos all over the states. Different types of wattages available...8,000 hours longevity...priced $40-$43.oo optimal if used at distances 12-18 inches from your iguana. Checked in Maders ...everything the website claims is true...These lights emit uvb AND heat!! Kill 2 birds with one stone or 1 iguana with one light?? j/k Known hazard=not safe for igs to be staring at these lights, not sure if igs do this Ive never seen my igs stare at their lights...but perhaps this is an alternative for some....Thought it was interesting.Submitted for your approval...lol
