As many of you have heard I am working a booth at the San Diego Herp Society Reptile Show for NIAD. I would have added to the NIAD string below but didn't want this to get lost. Here is what we have planned:
1. Of course the care flyer. I downloaded, printed and copied it and hope to heck I have made enough.
2. I also am going to make some of the NIAD flyers to hand to people should they ask what they can do to help. If you haven't seen these they give info about NIAD and suggestions on what people can do.
3. I also printed and made a ton of copies of the NIAD coloring page. If you haven't seen this it is a really neat thing. Simple picture kids can color on the front and reasons why a parent shouldn't buy their kid an ig on the back.
4. Donna the other volunteer has the horror pictures to put up on our backdrop.
5. We will have free samples of a proper iguana diet to hand to owners along with the recipe.
6. I am taking Mel with me to show people how big these wonderful creatures get (Mel is roughly 17 inches STV and 40 inches STL, she is missing roughly half her tail. She weighs in at a whopping 9.5 lbs!)
7. LOLA's MOM if you can e-mail me that list you did up of what it costs to own an ig I will do up a poster. Maybe title it "So you think that cute $5.99 iguana is a neat inexpensive pet? THINK AGAIN!". I would add up what Mel costs me but I don't have the time to figure it all out.
Donna was also going to do up some care videos. Something that showed clipping nails, making salad, etc. I thought a mix of cute scenes that showed human/ig interaction with the not so glamourous side of ig ownership (like an ig pooping in the tub) would be good. Unfortunately she did not have the time to get them done. But maybe someone else will like the idea enough to use it. Another idea for those of you that are handy with tools would be to make a simple cage thing about the size of a phone booth. Have people step inside and shut the door, then ask them how they would like to spend day after day in there. Donna also has a rehabbed ig that is ready to be adopted out. I suggested she might want to bring it along and take applications. Don't know if she is going to or not. So for those of you also involved with rescues you might take a list/photos along for those interested to fill out forms in order to adopt.
Wish me luck on Saturday. I am a little nervous about Mel. She is wonderfully tame, but I have never had her around large crowds. I will let all of you know how it goes afterwards.
