In Reply to: Sharing info on mustard greens as they relate to discolored urates, etc. posted by Iguanamomma on August 16, 1999 at 21:32:45:
Thanks for sharing this...Im still confused how mustard greens are responsible for discolored urates. It appears the vet was more concerned about lowering the alkalinity of the foods and promoting higher acidic action like in cases of gout,hi uric acid levels than removing oxalates (mustard greens have lowest oxalate levels of any dark leafy green right). The orange/amber colored urates can be from chronic dehydration, orange or red colored foods given, or from being gravid...I really don't think that the mustard greens had anything to do with it, but if lowering the alkalinity of food given to the posters iguana helped remedy the crystallization of the urates and changed the color of the igs urates back to normal that's great! Instead of romaine as Anne suggested I would of suggested loose leaf or butterhead lettuce...better calcium and comparable water than romaine.Who is this Anne Marsden? I wouldn't contradict her though she sounds like she knows what she's talking about!
Anyway....thanks for sharing this real interesting to me!
