I love all animals (at least the one s with LESS than 6 legs!)and love having a variety of pets. I also take the time and effort to learn the proper way to care for, feed and house any new types I get. (as some of you will notice from my joining this forum and asking a million questions?)
Unfortunately, a large number of people who own animlas, domestic as well as exotics, do not do this. If animal owners were required to go through a licensing/registration process where they had to pass a short test on the care, feeding and housing requirments of the animal they wanted to get, it would solve MANY prblems. We would have fewer animals abused out of simple ignorance (the lady at the pet store told me my ig ate meat/only needed a hot rock/would do fine in sand, etc and people having to get rid of pets because they didn't realize how big/active/expensive they would be after babyhood.
At present we have to license dogs and keep their shots up to date. Why not a similar thing for ALL pets?
I do agree with the NY law in some respects: I really do think that elephants should not be kept as pets in the middle of the city!(any type of elephant)Seriously, so many big cats are rescued and subsequently put down because ther owners didn't have the space/money to properly feed them and give them the excercise they need. As a result, they have vitamin deficiencies and are kept in dark, cramped cages or rooms and suffer horribly. And we have all seen (either actually or in the news) that it happens often and to so manty kinds of animals, even domestics.
We may have to bend our pride and not stand up so hard for our "constitutional rights" and let the lawmakers impose regs and licensing, but think of who will benefit the most....THE ANIMALS!
