The NY State Ban on dangerous animals which included iguanas (and pythons and boas I believe) was not intended to make it illegal to own iguanas, just to sell them in pet stores. Unfortunately, that is not what happened (probably because the pet stores have a more powerful lobby than the responsible pet owners) and now the pet owners are breaking the law.
The sad thing is that some people are still uninformed about the law. They love their pets and do not know the iguana is now illegal.
The other said thing is that iguanas are already being dumped on the streets in NY. A confused, 6' iguana is not a pretty site. Not everyone knows what to do with their iguana. I have talked with two people so far that are trying to find responsible homes by using the internet but this is only a fraction of the homes that are now illegal.
Yes a grandfather clause would have be wise but the law makers see iguanas as viscious and in one fell swoop thought they could get rid of them.
