Those that would willingly give up their pets ONLY to save them from some unknown horrors at the hands of bureaucrats will/did find good homes for them so they are safe. Those that are hoping to escape discovery.....There will always be the people that think they are "doing good" by turning someone in that's breaking a law...which it is if it is in relation to crimes against a person, business, etc. But this is an unjust law. Then there are the irate neighbors out there who now have a "weapon" against their neighbor that they never liked in the first place, didn't like their loud music, didn't like their looks, blahblahblah Yeah, yeah, take away that person's iguana and teach them a lesson!!
And does NYC have any plans on the books for what it will do with the confiscated iguanas (and other animals). NO
All of us who do not live in NYC DO need to show support to those that do....as one of us could very well be next. People tend to sit on their hands when it doesn't involve them. It could. Somewhere out there some city is watching to see how this works out and may already be planning to follow suit. Most politicians seem to be all too willing to save us from ourselves. After all "THEY" know what's best for the people. And the saddest part...a lot of people are willing to accept this and allow themselves to be taken care of like children.
In Panama City Beach, Florida, the first week of August, there was a storm brewing. A man and his daughter were struck by lightning. The man died at the scene; last I heard the girl survived. Witnesses to this admitted that they heard the thunder AND saw the streaks of lightning. But one was quoted as saying "no one came down to the beach and told us it was dangerous to be on it." HELLO??? My children knew it was w/out me having to tell them. When did people stop using common sense??
It takes some common sense to be a responsible pet owner. A responsible pet owner doesn't need a government entity to tell them how to protect themselves and others from their chosen pet. For the irresponsible, there are already laws on the books that should be used. To make it a crime to possess certain animals because of the irresponsibility of a few, is insane.
Whew! It's been awhile since I've been on my soapbox. Starting to get a bit dizzy so I'll step down.
