"Metropolian Diary" column 8/9/99
Stephanie Morris and her husband were walking near 54th Street and Avenue of the Americas last month when they noticed a crowd staring at the side of a building. Possibly a man rappelling down off the roof? Not at all. It was an enormous iguana (an estimated 3 feet long), clinging vertically to the brick face about six stories up, basking in the sun. The police were on hand, perhaps to arrest the iguana or perhaps to make sure that no one was injured if it fell, but everyone seemed more amused than concerned. Finally, after one scary moment when it seemed to lose its footing, the iguana managed to climb back onto a ledge and into the building. The drama ended. The audience applauded and dispersed.
